Strap your belt on, kid. It’s a Super Mario Bros. review

SuperMarioBros

Plot

They re-imagined so many aspects of the Mario universe in creative ways here. Too bad the movie got too dumb for its own good several times, though.

Then again, it was never meant to be taken seriously anyway.

Characters

I’ll never be able to look at Fisher Stevens the same way again.

At least they got the Luigi / Daisy thing right!

Visuals

Every scene had tons of things going on at once, most of which weren’t important to the plot. It occasionally got distracting.

The puppetry was great, though.

Product Placement

Obvious video game things aside, Mario used a bottle of Evian water to fix the van, and the Bob-omb was wearing Reeboks for some reason.

Rewatchability

Super Mario Bros. doesn’t exactly lend itself well to a movie format, but since it’s one of the most popular video games of all time, a movie was inevitable.

Sure, it was cheesy and stupid, but it’s the good kind of cheesy and stupid.

  1. Was not expecting such a high score for this movie when I clicked over here. Re-imagined? Yes. Creative? Maybe. Ridiculous? Definitely. I’ll give you the puppetry, even though Yoshi looked like he was stolen from the set of Jurassic Park, he still looked and worked great. The big thing I still remember was the giant spark throwers in all the vehicles, which often were more important than being able to see the actual actors in the scene.

  2. Wow. This is the most generous review I’ve ever seen for anything. Ever. I admire your optimism! Even as a 12 year old, I couldn’t accept a King Koopa or goombahs that looked nothing like the video game.

    • I think watching it for the first time as an adult made a huge difference.

The Mario universe is not easy to translate to live action. It could have been a lot worse, and I thought some of the things were kind of clever.

  3. That score completely threw me off, was not expecting it to be so high. I watched this as a kid and remember being very confused. I didn’t know what was going on half the time and so much of the film was just bizzare and unnatural. I look at the film these days and it is truly disgusting to my eyes, funny to some degree but just insanely rubbish.

  4. Mario pay you off or something? :)

  5. Hmm 2.2 seems a bit off but ok :D
