They re-imagined so many aspects of the Mario universe in creative ways here. Too bad the movie got too dumb for its own good several times, though.
Then again, it was never meant to be taken seriously anyway.

Every scene had tons of things going on at once, most of which weren’t important to the plot. It occasionally got distracting.
The puppetry was great, though.
Obvious video game things aside, Mario used a bottle of Evian water to fix the van, and the Bob-omb was wearing Reeboks for some reason.
Super Mario Bros. doesn’t exactly lend itself well to a movie format, but since it’s one of the most popular video games of all time, a movie was inevitable.
Sure, it was cheesy and stupid, but it’s the good kind of cheesy and stupid.
