Ra! Ra! Ra! It’s a Stargate review

Now I see where Xenosaga and so many other sci-fi works got a few of their ideas from.

At the time of this writing, and having done no research, I feel like I should know who James Spader is, but I just can’t remember what I would know him from.

I think sometimes that not being able to recognize actors makes certain films better.

Those weird creatures, Ra’s ship, and the titular stargate were all great.

Product Placement

Gone are the days when I’d take a whole point off for one 5th Avenue candy bar showing up.

I wish they’d make more sci-fi movies like this, instead of those post-apocalyptic explosion fests they put out year after year.

  1. Growing up, I had NOTHING in common with my dad, but for some reason, we really bonded over this movie, so it holds a special place in my heart. I need to watch it again.

  2. I couldn’t get into it. Over my head I think.

  3. i really liked the show too… and i always think of James Spader from Wolf… good movie…

  4. Good film, had some really out there sci fi ideas. Loved the tv series 😀

  5. If you don’t know who James Spader is, you should ask Tyson at Head in a Vice 😉

  6. I love that movie and adore James Spader. His finest moments (for me) are in “sex, lies and videotape”. Thank you for a lovely and succinct reminder of why “Stargate” is so special!

    • Ah that’s one I haven’t seen yet, either. I wish I had seen Stargate sooner! It really is special.

  7. I loved this movie way back when, but haven’t seen it in a long time. Never got into the TV series, though I did watch a bit of Atlantis It really is a great, and original concept.

  8. YES!!!! Loved it, glad you gave it a perfect score.

  9. Man with a score like that I feel like I should watch this film again. I remember watching this for the first time back in like 1996 or 97 on VHS. This film used to freak the hell out of me. It was so out there and atmospheric. I watched it again when I was a teenager but I don’t really remember feeling anything specific towards the film. All I knew back then and know now is that the conept of a Stargate is badass and mysterious.

Might as well give it another go, third time lucky right?

  10. Stargate is a favorite movie of mine, and I adore James Spader in it (he starred in Boston Legal on TV and was a sleazy co-worker in Baby Boom). But I think he made this role. So glad to see you gave it 3 out of 3!

    • I think I recognized his name from William Shatner’s autobiography, Up Till Now. I don’t think I’ve seen him in anything else yet.

  11. Stargate is one of my favorite sci-fi movies. Because of Dr. Daniel Jackson the film had a sweet lovable quality that is seldom seen in this genre. Spader did a great job bringing Jackson to life. Interestingly, this is one of the few truly good guys he ever played. Most of the time he is playing either bad guys or very complicated good guys who have a lot of flaws. This fall he will be starring in NBC’s The Blacklist.

    • Yeah he seemed like a friendly, easygoing character. Usually main characters in these types of movies are tough or obnoxious.

  12. Watched this film when I was a kid and got intrigued. This was my introduction to pyramids-were-built-by-aliens conspiracy theory. The first thing I remembered when I saw that poster was the scene where they ate some kind of weird animal (giant turtle something?) that tasted like chicken (?)

Thanks for checking my blog. I noticed that you liked many of my negative reviews. Happy to deliver the snark.
