Be a part of an effective team with an Oblivion review

Oblivion

Plot

Sure, it took a bunch of stuff from other movies, but it never felt like a ripoff. It was an interesting story, nicely told, and that’s what counts.

Characters

Everyone delivered their lines in such serious tones. Not that that’s a problem, of course.

Visuals

Finally! A sci-fi movie that features sleek and shiny high tech stuff rather than beaten up old post-apocalyptic junk. On top of that, minimal color filters were used and the camera stayed still!

Product Placement

All products seem to have been wiped out during the war.

Rewatchability

Oblivion is 2013’s Prometheus. It’s an entertaining sci-fi movie that makes you think rather than just blowing things up. Unfortunately, it didn’t raise enough questions for me to consider doing an “Oblivion for Dummies” series, though.

  1. Really looking forward to seeing this over the weekend. It does look like it borrows from other sci-fi movies, but I love how Earth is portrayed, and I’m normally a fan of Cruise’s action flicks. :)

  2. Yay for cameras on tripods! I’m lobbying for this movie for this weekend.

  3. Way too many similarities to other movies that I just did not buy into. Good review.

  4. I loved this film, glad you gave it such a good score :D

I just love how the first big film of the year was actually good, puts me in a good mood for Iron Man 3 next week :D

  5. Prometheus was entertaining?!?

    • Let me rephrase that. “Oblivion is 2013’s Prometheus, as in ‘I’m the only one who seems to have enjoyed it'”

  6. It’s funny that the first couple reviews I’ve read of this were moderately negative, but more and more positive reviews are starting to roll in now. Will have to check it out at some point.

  7. I saw it at a press screening last week. It looked good and Cruise did a decent job, but the story was very clich├ęd and completely stolen from everything, from ‘2001’ to ‘Silent Running’. You can read my review at http://buzzhub.wordpress.com/2013/04/12/film-review-oblivion/

  8. 2013’s “Prometheus”, huh? I know that will turn some people away from it. I didn’t like it as much as you overall, but I’m glad you enjoyed it.

Does the NY Yankees hat that Cruise wears count as product placement?

  9. Nice score!! I see so many reviews all over the place. Good to see a perfect one.

    • I love a good non-action-focused sci-fi movie. Even when there was fighting, this movie was very calm and relaxing.

  10. It’s playing at the $3.00 theatre in town. I was thinking about catching it.
