Shaddap! I’m reviewin’ Lawless, ya mugs

Plot

I love gangster movies.** Have I ever mentioned that? They’re my favorites.

This seemed more like a western disguised as a gangster film, though, and westerns are one of my least favorite genres.

**Real ones. From the 1930s.

Characters

Almost everyone did great jobs, and Shia was obviously trying his best to not be his usual self, but he didn’t quite make it.

Visuals

A little bit of color filters is okay, but they went overboard with it quite a bit.

Product Placement

Lots of vintage signs around, but who cares? Most of that stuff isn’t made anymore anyway.

Rewatchability

Call me a squeamish wimp, but it was just too bloody and violent for me.

If I want to see a good film about gangsters and a filling station, I’ll just watch the much more interesting The Petrified Forest instead.

  1. I really want to see this movie, though I’m not much of a fan of Shia LaBeouf. I am a fan of Tom Hardy, though.

  2. This was a slight disappointment mainly because of my huge expectations. This wasn’t as good as I hoped but I still thought it was pretty good.

  3. Nice review. Tom Hardy is the man in this flick but the one who really runs away with it all is Guy Pearce who has never ever been as vicious as he is here. Everybody else here is great too, but he’s the one who steals the show, in my opinion.

  4. Bummer, I wanted to see this. (I might still give it a try because I love Jessica Chastain but I’m not much for blood or violence, so it sounds like it won’t be my type of movie. I, too, am a squeamish wimp.)

High fives for The Petrified Forest!

  5. Hmmm, Shia is one of my favorite actors more because he’s just so adorable, then anything else. I will probably take a gander at it but, I remember when it was being previewed and then I guess it came out and then it was gone. That told me everything I needed to know. I need to see this Petrified Forest.

  6. I didn’t think it was that bad really. Sure it was a little light on plot and I agree that the violence did threaten to overshadow the film but it was enjoyable enough I thought.

  7. Shia L. and I share the same birthday!! Lol. Never seen this movie, but am glad you did a write up about it. Right now I’m transfixed by The Walking Dead on Netflix. On Season One, Episode Six. :)

  8. I quite enjoyed this and Hardy was a joy to watch, his character was very funny.

  9. I rather liked this film coz it reminded me of Boardwalk Empire, however the story and characters weren’t as strong as that show. I loved Tom Hardy, sure he was a man of few words and mumbles, but he was still pretty badass. I also thought Guy Pearce was pretty good too as that prick that everybody hates, but plays his part bloody well.

I also see what you mean about the violence, but I really vibe off of that kind of stuff so it didn’t bother me too much.

    • Deep down, I just want everyone to get along haha I guess that’s why I don’t enjoy violence in movies.

There were plenty of people out there who loved the film though, and I think movies that most either love or hate are better than ones everyone considers “just okay”.
